I made this video of Hallie.  I am a crazy cat lady.  That is all…

What did you shoot this with?

My early Christmas gift, haha. Nikon D300s. And before you ask, the video quality and the rolling shutter issues will prevent me from excitedly declaring it the be all, end all camera for my still and video needs. I’m still learning about it and holy crap it is so much more camera than my D60.

I see what you are saying, but it will do for most stuff I’d imagine. As an unrepentant opportunist, I’m a fan of the video on the new DSLRs because, the last camera I had with video on it shot 320×240 at 10fps. Its really hard not to improve on that.

Haha. Wow. The D300s does 24fps in HD (720p, not 1080p even though it does have an enhanced mode that says 1080p), but it is definitely a memory hog. I have 16gigs in the two card slots (LOVE that, btw) and it can eat through it all in 20mins if I have any pictures on there too. I shot the Hallie video in standard mode with a 50mm/1.8 lens, and it turned out well enough for the video material. I mean, it’s perfect for people that want to do short videos of things important to them. I’ve seen some amazing videos produced by the D300s on youtube, and you can definitely tell three things about them: great lenses (no $125 lens for them!), tripod, and no fast panning.

Brett would love to get his hands on my camera to play with the video function. He’s a video person. I’m not really into them, but I think I would be interested in creating shorts like the one above now that I have this camera. There’s so much to learn on this beast going from prosumer to semi-pro SLR that to add in video would probably make my head explode. The camera is intuitive as far as basic functions go, but I can do bracketing! Broad ISO changes! There’s the horizon indicator buried deep in menus! Auto focus! Faster fps! Live view! A dedicated INFO button! More than THREE focus points! I’m overwhelmed, but super excited about this camera despite it feels like I’m lugging around a cannon ball.

I should also note that I have discovered that CS4 and Lightroom 2 (2.5 even) don’t support .nef files for the D300s right now. Big negative since I shot some pics in RAW and now can’t do much with them without installing all of Nikon’s software and muddling up my usual way of processing pics. :(

Very nice. I don’t know much to anything about the DSLRs but I do know kitties are cute.

Oh and if you are planning on moving to hell I have a really cool book about the history of it. There’s even pretty pictures.

Hahah, thanks Sabrina. I might be interested in that book. It can tell me about the accommodations to expect at my arrival.

I think you need the Camera Raw 5.5 update. I have links to both download genders (Windows and Mac).

For Windows: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4580
For Macs: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4577

D’oh. Thanks Matt. I remember thinking I needed to update Camera Raw, but for some reason saw “Nikon D3000″ and thought “well, shit they don’t have an update for the D300s yet.” And then I read the readme file. Guess that’s why it is called “Read Me,” haha.

It’s called the History of Hell and actually pretty fascinating to watch the role the threat of an underworld of punishment had on all the religions and how bits were adopted from one to the other
