whoops!

It’s been a long time since I have posted. Fear not, any remaining blog readers… I will update soon. I’ve been doing a lot of stuff, and school is almost over too! I’m done with classes and I’m down to just having finals next week.

Next week my sister is flying from Wisconsin to Nashville to hang out in Middle Tennessee before trekking with me (or Brett?) to our parents’ house. And also, my cousin is flying to Nashville from South Korea to spend Christmas in Tennessee! I’m excited about both of them being in town. Woot woot. I can’t believe how fast time has flown waiting on next week to get here.

I’ve also been doing a lot of internet shopping. Half my Christmas shopping is done thanks to Etsy and Brett buying his own gift, hah. This year, Brett and I are just buying small things for each other and we each bought an electronic gadget as a gift “from each other.” Mine’s gonna be here tomorrow, and Brett has been using his for a week or two now.

I have plans on revamping the blog and header as a way to celebrate my blogs one year blogiversary (at least on lifeaswife.com anyway). That’s coming up. I just renewed the domain, which was going to expire on Dec. 27.

See ya later, blog friends! :)

I have a question since you brought it up: Exactly how much does the domain and hosting cost you per year/month/day/whatever (pick whichever applies)? I was thinking about porting my blog over to its own domain rather than the free wordpress stuff, which is great but somewhat limiting. Asking you is easier than doing my own research.

Since I use godaddy.com I pay about $60-70 a year in keeping the domain and hosting. Renewal for domain was 10,69 or some strange cent value like that. Hosting is 4.79/mo for 12 months (4.49 for 24mo) for either the “Wordpress Hosting” package or the “Linux/Windows Hosting” package. I have the Linux hosting because they didn’t have the option of the WP hosting package a year ago.

It’s probably too much to pay, and I didn’t do much research on other domain/hosting sites before doing it. Godaddy.com was the only place I really knew how to use because my dad’s been buying domains from them for eons. They also can screw you over if you don’t know exactly what you want to buy, or if you (like me) don’t renew the hosting package through the little window where they compile all your hosting data… so I ended up buying a NEW hosting plan (thus forcing me to finally purchase a domain name to go along with that hosting for my “in theory” photography business).

My suggestion is if you go through godaddy.com, either chat with one of their reps online while you’re buying to make sure you’re buying the right things, or just go with the domain name, plus a wordpress hosting package. They do an install of WP for you (if you choose) so you don’t have to mess with mSQL or anything of the sort, which was a big priority for me since I don’t understand that stuff and it’s a steep learning curve for me. Oh, and usually if you’re a new customer buying, you get the 1.99 .com doman when you buy hosting. Otherwise it’s usually 9.99 or some weird 10.69 thing.

I’ve never had any down time (not that I know of and I don’t have enough readers to contact me if it does go down) or any REAL problems. Their web-based FTP client blows majorly, so if you have one on board your computer, you’ll be in better luck than me.

I hope that helps! I really like your blog. It’s interesting, unlike mine.

I should learn mySQL and all that jazz since it would have a significant impact on my day to day work, but I have thus far put it off. That’s alot better than I thought, because I had seen the 1.99 domains and the hosting prices, but I didn’t want to pay for something find out it blows majorly or get hit with some huge (read: hundreds of dollars) price increase. I think I will look into this.

Also, your blog is interesting. Where else can you find cryptic explanations of early Christmas gifts (electronic gadget – is that a euphemism?), honest discussion of “gay” marriage, and see a cat licking itself?

I tried to read about mySQL, but it all sounded incredibly difficult to me. I gave up instead. You would use mySQL at work? You work at TYS right? Or are you just referring to your daily computing work? Ha!
I’ve never had a problem with godaddy.com other than their difficult to navigate website. I like having my own domain, even if it is expensive.

My blog is a massive seizure of weird and unimportant whinings and ramblings. It doesn’t make sense. But I’m not a niche blogger and I’m not trying to make money. I’ll never understand why so many (i.e. more than one) people care to read my garbage!

Yeah, I do GIS work at TYS. We are in the process of slowly upgrading our GIS database, and the system we are moving to has a mySQL back end. I could also stand to learn java/javascript, python, or C# in the name of marketable, highly-sought-after skills, but who the hell wants a job that pays well anyway?

Ehh, I was shocked to find out that people actually read my blog.
